Mature versions of Windows can be obtained at various Service Pack levels. Windows without a Service Pack is known as Windows Original Release. Windows with Service Pack X is known as Windows Includes Service Pack X.

The Service Pack provided on a Windows Includes Service Pack X product CD/DVD is not a separate file to be installed after installing Windows. Rather, the Service Pack files are built into and, therefore, are installed simultaneously with the Windows installation files.

To avoid installing Service Packs, typical Windows users should obtain Windows with the latest possible Service Pack. For users with particular needs, however, such as developers testing the compatibility of their products against various versions and editions of Windows and/or it subcomponents, it might make sense to obtain various versions and editions of Windows at various Service Pack levels. This page lists the used hard disk space, Internet Explorer version, Outlook Express/Windows Mail version, Windows Media Player version, DirectX version, and Display defaults for a clean installation of various editions of Windows 98 through Windows 7 at various Service Pack levels.

• Hard Disk: 300GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3300620A PATA/100.
• Video: Motherboard does not include integrated video. Install add-in video ATI Radeon 9600 SE AGP 8x 128MB DDR.
• Monitors: 1.) Acer X193W LCD (native resolution: 1440x900, manufactured: Sep09) connected to video via DVI, or 2.) Hitachi CML174SWX LCD (native resolution: 1280x1024, manufactured: Sep02) connected to video via DVI.

2.2.  Hardware: Windows Vista/7 Defaults

• Motherboard: Intel DG33FB (Intel G33 Express Chipset).
• Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750.
• Memory: 2GB Kingston 800MHz DDR2.
• Hard Disk: 250GB Seagate Barracuda ES ST3250620NS SATA 3gbs.
• Video: In BIOS, select Ext PCIE Graphics (PEG) over Int Graphics (IGD). Install add-in video Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT PCI-E x16 256MB GDDR3.
• Monitors: 1.) Acer X193W LCD (native resolution: 1440x900, manufactured: Sep09) connected to video via DVI, or 2.) Hitachi CML174SXW LCD (native resolution: 1280x1024, manufactured: Sep02) connected to video via DVI.

3.1.  Windows Installation: Windows 98 SE Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows 98 SE:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows 98 Startup Disk.
   2. Delete all existing partitions, create a primary DOS partition, mark it active, format it, and then initiate the installation of Windows 98 SE.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
2. When Windows 98 SE loads the first time, the Add New Hardware Wizard: This wizard searches for new drivers for: Plug and Play Monitor dialog appears. Click Next.
3. The Add New Hardware Wizard: What do you want Windows to do dialog appears. By default, Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) is selected. Click Next.
4. The Add New Hardware Wizard: Windows will search for new drivers in its driver database on your hard drive, and in any of the following selected locations dialog appears. By default, Floppy disk drives is selected. Click Next.
5. The Add New Hardware Wizard: ...Location of driver: C:\WINDOWS\INF\MONITOR.INF dialog appears. Click Next.
6. The Add New Hardware Wizard: Windows has finished installing the software that your new hardware device requires dialog appears. Click Finish.
7. Restart the computer.
8. Take the Windows 98 SE defaults.

3.2.  Windows Installation: Windows ME Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows ME:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows ME Startup Disk.
   2. Delete all existing partitions, create a primary DOS partition, mark it active, format it, and then initiate the installation of Windows ME.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Take the Windows ME defaults.

3.3.  Windows Installation: Windows 2000 Pro SP3 Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows 2000 Pro Includes SP3:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows 2000 Pro Includes SP3 product CD.
   2. In Windows 2000 Pro Setup, delete all existing partitions, create a partition, and format it NTFS.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Take the Windows 2000 Pro SP3 defaults.

3.4.  Windows Installation: Windows 2000 Pro SP4 Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows 2000 Pro Includes SP3:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows 2000 Pro Includes SP3 product CD.
   2. In Windows 2000 Pro Setup, delete all existing partitions, create a partition, and format it NTFS.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install For IT Professionals (microsoft.com):
   1. The Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Setup Wizard: ...Do you want Setup to archive these files dialog appears. Click Do Not Archive Files | Next.
   2. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Take the Windows 2000 Pro SP4 defaults.

3.5.  Windows Installation: Windows XP HE Orig Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP HE Orig:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows XP HE Orig product CD.
   2. In Windows XP HE Setup, delete all existing partitions, create a partition, and format it NTFS.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
2. When Windows XP HE Orig loads the first time, the Monitor Settings: Windows adjusted your screen resolution. If you can read this text, click OK to continue dialog appears. Click OK.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Take the Windows XP HE Orig defaults.

3.6.  Windows Installation: Windows XP HE SP1 Defaults

1. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP HE Includes SP1:
   1. Boot the computer from the Windows XP HE Includes SP1 product CD.
   2. In Windows XP HE Setup, delete all existing partitions, create a partition, and format it NTFS.
   3. Otherwise, select default/typical/recommended throughout.
