I. Introduction

Ever notice that .asx and .asf files can be played but not saved? Would you like to save streaming media to your Hard Disk for future playing? Of course you would! ASFRecorder (ASFR) is an easy to use utility which allows one to save .asx and .asf files to Hard Disk for later viewing.

Important Note: The creator of ASFR is no longer supporting it. ASFR v1.1 will be the last version of this product.

II. Using ASFRecorder

  1. Click the link to the .asx/.asf file. Wait for Windows Media Player (WMP) to open, and for the movie to start playing.

Note: Recording will start from the beginning of the file.

  2. Right click within WMP and select Properties.
  3. Place cursor over beginning of the WMP Location field. When the cursor changes to an "I shape," left click the mouse and drag to select the entire path. Right click on the highlighted path and select Copy.
  4. Open ASFR. Click File | Open URL....
  5. If necessary, clear the contents of the ASFR Open URL field. Right click within the ASFR Open URL field and select Paste.

Note: In steps 1-5 the location of the movie, and its filename, was copied from WMP's Properties | Location into ASFR's Open URL field.

  6. Place a slash, "/" (no quotes) at the end of the path just pasted into the ASFR Open URL field.
  7. Go back to WMP | Properties. Select and copy the Name of the file, for example, x123ABC.asf.
  8. Go back to the ASFR Open URL field and paste the Name of the file after the slash.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Select a folder to save the file to. Click Save.
  11. If the download happens to stop, close ASFR | reopen ASFR | click File | click Open URL... | from the drop reselect the file location with filename | click OK | select the same folder you were saving the file to | click Save.
